Denmark moves up the stem cell research league

A major investment in stem cell research has boosted the University of Copenhagen into the international stem cell champions’ league

The Danish Stem Cell Center (DanStem) at the University of Copenhagen was founded in January 2011 on a € 8,7 million grant by the Danish Council for Strategic Research - the biggest single grant from the council ever. On top of this, the Novo Nordisk Foundation will contribute € 47 million over the next ten years.

Professor and Director of DanSterm, Henrik Semb says that the grand scale investment is the main reason that the University of Copenhagen is now able to attract some of the world´s best researchers in stem cell research.

A number of high profiled researchers from the University of Edinburgh is a first wave of international researchers who will be joining DanStem in the coming months. Also relocating to the center are several members from one of Europe's leading research groups in stem cell research, focusing on developing new stem-cell-based therapies for diabetes and cancer.
