Description

The Master’s programme in Structural and Civil engineering at Aalborg University concerns the design and analysis of buildings and infrastructures. This includes land-based structures, offshore installations, harbours, coastal protection as well as structural design of devices for alternative energy.

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering incorporates a wide range of disciplines: structural mechanics, material behaviour and modelling, geotechnical engineering and hydraulics. Throughout the study, modern-day technologies are applied for analysis and design.

During the four semesters you will get an understanding of
  • Structures
  • Building materials
  • Fluids and soil
  • Interaction problems, both static and dynamic
Expertise in
  • Computational methods
  • Experimental methods
  • Probabilistic methods
  • Computer programming

Career Opportunities

Many civil engineers obtain employment in the construction industry where they are responsible for calculations, choice of building materials and inspection of the building site for security purposes among others. You could be employed as a consulting engineer, practicing engineer or teacher at a university.

Typical assignments for your career as a Structural and Civil Engineer include:
  • Design of bridges and foundation for wind turbines
  • Construction of larger building projects e.g. offshore wind turbines and jackets
  • Planning and administration

About the Degree

The Master in Structural and Civil Engineering is offered both at Aalborg Univeristy's campusses in Aalborg and Esbjerg.
The programme follows the same standards and regulations in both Aalborg and Esbjerg but at the campus in Esbjerg there is a special focus on the following:
  • A close collaboration with the industry
  • Securing realistic and relevant projects by collaborating with the industry
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and modelling techniques
  • Commercial FEA software packages: ANSYS and ABAQUS and PLAXIS
  • Learning about proper design of structural details and mechanical systems
  • Offshore structures design
  • Programming: MatLab, Fortran, Python
  • Experimental methods and LabVIEW
