Denmark has the fourth best higher education system in the world

…and the second best in the Europe. U21 Rankings has just released its 2017 report, ranking 50 countries on resources, environment, connectivity and output.

Universitas 21 is the leading global network of research-intensive universities, working together to foster global citizenship and institutional innovation through research-inspired teaching and learning, and each year Universitas 21 creates a U21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems report ranking 50 countries on resources, environment, connectivity and output.

The four areas each weigh 20 percent making up 100 percent of the final score:

  • Resources is defined as being adequately resourced either by government or the private sector, a necessary condition the higher education system to be performing well
  • Environment is having quality in terms of degree offerings, diversity, competition between institutions and external monitoring of performance
  • Connectivity is a two-way flow of information between the higher education sector and the rest of society, linked internationally in education and research thus promoting technical change and economic growth
  • Output is measured by the country’s “research out and it’s impact, student throughput, the national stock of graduates and researchers, the quality of a nation’s best universities and employability of graduates.”

This year the Danish education system is the second best in Europe only surpassed by Switzerland, and on a global scale it is in fourth place.

Denmark has dropped one spot in 2017 from 2016 where it ranked third overall. In 2017 it ranks of 2 for Resources, 21 for Environment, 4 for Connectivity and 4 for Output. Last year Denmark ranked 1 for Resources, 31 for Environment, 2 for Connectivity, and finally 4 for Output.

The 2017 ranking shows that the Danish education system scores lower on Resources and Connectivity, but has improved a great deal on Environment and Output. Especially the quality of universities has improved the score for Output this year. Overall the total score is well above that expected at Denmarks' level of income.
