Design for Play is for students who like to explore new paths and challenge themselves and others through playful experiences. You will become a frontrunner for new ways of designing in a society that is increasingly requiring more and better creative competences.
You will experience play as a motivational factor in design and development processes and get to design play experiences for people of all ages. You will build on your basic design discipline and design for play using relevant knowledge, tools and methods.

You will work in cross-disciplinary groups and on various levels with external partners and learn to:
  • analyse, identify and design specific play experiences
  • use play to support development, learning and experiences 
  • design relevant play as seen from a children’s and user perspective
  • be aware of different play cultures
  • develop and intervene in processes using a playful approach
  • work with play systematically and through research and theory 

The programme was established with the LEGO Foundation and the LEGO Group and is the world’s first, exclusive two-year international Master’s Degree programme within Design for Play. 

Design for Play reinforces and challenges the fields of industrial design, fashion design, textile design, accessory design and communication design.

Career Opportunities  

You can get a job in many types of industries and organisations depending on your interests and competence profile. You can design children's products, for instance at LEGO, HABA, Kompan, Ikea and Toca Boca. Or you can design playful experiences in museums, experience parks, schools and hospitals. You will be able to contribute with playful approaches in design companies and design agencies at product, process and strategy levels. Your experiences with play for all ages will make you a suited ambassador for play within NGOs such as The LEGO Foundation, UNICEF, etc. The programme also qualifies you to pursue an academic career in universities and design schools, and to become a facilitator, teacher or communicator in design and play.

  • Film pitch (make a two-minute video pitch to present yourself and why you want to pursue an MA degree in Design. For one of the two minutes you must speak directly into the camera.)

  • BA certificate
  • Copy of your passport if you are not Danish

There is a tuition fee for all full-time degree students with a citizenship from outside of EU/EAA/Switzerland. Students within an exchange programme are not required to pay tuition. Enquire with the school about the tuition fee.

Campus Kolding


Design School Kolding differs from traditional universities in that the intake is based on talent. The School develops and cherishes talent, and challenges it by teaching students to reflect on their own process and on how to cooperate through projects drawn from a specific user context – often in collaboration with the business community.

Design School Kolding builds on the tradition of Danish design, placing focus on design which is meaningful. Innovation is conceived in relating to history and tradition. School methodology builds on knowledge and research and place emphasis on sensory perception and experimentation – a union of hand and spirit, head and hands.

Design School Kolding has university status and provides a framework for a number of recognised researchers in a young field of research as well as an increasing output of PhD projects. Emphasis is placed on putting design into practice reflected in the school's good workshop facilities where students can work with their material in a 1:1 scale. It is important to the school that its in-house teachers practice what they teach and the school makes use of a large number of guest teachers to ensure inspiration from professional practice.
